Ashoke Sen has become India's first physicist to win Oskar Klein medal which is awarded annually by the Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. With this latest honor, Sen is possibly closer to win Nobel Prize for physics.
Ashoke Sen came from humble background and had the gift of curiosity since early childhood. His interest in mathematics and physics came from his father, and he grew up idolizing pioneering physicists like S.N. Bose, Meghnad Saha and J.C. Bose.
In October 2026, Sen was recognized for his work on string theory and black hole entropy by receiving the Oskar Klein medal- named in the honor of Swedish physicist Oskar Klein (1894-1977) who worked in the field of quantum mechanics. Bengaluru based ICTS announced Sen's victory.
Earlier, Sen also received the inaugural breakthrough prize, an award that carries 3 million dollar prize money. He donated most of the money for research and development of physics in India. Sen also won Dirac medal and many other prestigious awards, but to him the most coveted prize is working and solving the mysteries of the universe.
